Sustainability at Ball

In June 2008, Ball published its first group wide sustainability report. It documents our endeavors to minimize our impact on the environment, offer secure and healthy workplaces to our employees, become involved in our communities and interact with our stakeholders.

We have made and can continue to make the greatest contribution to sustainable development by continuous product and process innovations. We have succeeded in continuously reducing the amount of material used in our products. By promoting recycling programs, we help to implement closed-loop material flows and increase the proportion of recycled material available for our products. In respect of our production, we have reduced energy consumption, emissions and waste.

Succeeding in further developing these aspects is a commitment for us. We have, however, just started to apply the term "sustainability" to our engagement in economic, environmental and social matters. What is new for us is our commitment to broaden and deepen our efforts by embedding a more formalized sustainability approach into Ball’s strategy and operations. This first sustainability report is part of that commitment.

We are concentrating on five key areas:

  • Advance sustainable packaging
  • Reduce our environmental footprint
  • Care for our employees and communities
  • Create prosperity for us and others
  • Strengthen stakeholder relationships
We have formulated specific goals for each of these key areas; achieving these goals will advance us along the path to becoming a more sustainable company. Our targets commit the company to cooperate with all stakeholders in the packaging supply chain – from resource supplier’s to consumers – to optimize our products and processes. Only with the active cooperation of all those involved can we achieve real progress towards more sustainable packaging. Therefore it is of great importance for us to continue enhancing cooperation with our stakeholders; in particular our customers, suppliers, employees, communities and shareholders. Our report is based on the Reporting Framework of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
