Re-sealable Cans
All round, the beverage can is an ideal container, there is just one feature it does not yet possess: it is not re-sealable.
New can ends and closure systems represent a complex field of research for Ball Packaging Europe. The company is currently developing a concept which combines the particular advantages of the round can end with the additional benefits of a re-sealable closure. Easy to stack, high filling rates, hermetic seal, tamper-proof - these are the positive features offered by the beverage can, thanks to the particular shape of the can end.
But the benefits of a re-sealable container are very important to the consumer: there is no spillage when the container is transported and the consumer can drink what is left of the beverage at a later point in time.
The objective is therefore to develop concepts which include both a re-sealable feature and the features offered by current product.
Ball Packaging Europe has analysed different systems for re-sealable cans. Technical feasibility and compliance with the current extremely stringent performance parameters such as minimum shelf life, standards relating to internal pressure, problem-free use, convenience, reliability have all been carefully investigated. Also studied were the effects on processes at fillers' plants and cost-effectiveness.
Specialists at the Technical Center in co-operations with competent partners are working on a solution which optimally meets all performance parameters. Initial tests were promising and therefore commercial application is expected in the near future.
